Bones Bearings - Bones Bearings revolutionized the skateboard bearing market. They were the first company to develop bearings designed specifically for skateboards.
George Powell, co-founder of Powell Peralta skateboards and Bones wheels, wanted to design a bearing that could withstand the stress and wear of skateboarding.
So he traveled the world looking for manufacturers to collaborate with to create the ultimate skateboard bearings. Eventually, he partnered with a Swiss bearing manufacturer, creating what is known today as "Bones Swiss Bearings."
Innovations include:
- Non-contact, removable rubber shield for easy cleaning and reduced friction.
- Nylon ball retainer improves high speed and top speed.
-High quality steel is used to increase strength.
- Clearances and tolerances adjusted to withstand impact and lateral stress.
However, the high manufacturing costs in Switzerland made them inaccessible to the average skater, so he took his design to a Chinese manufacturer who could produce them at a lower cost. This is how Bones Reds bearings were born. Reds have all the same Skate Rated™ features as Swiss, but differ in the quality of the materials and precision of the manufacturing.
This is why Bones Bearings has two different categories: the "Swiss" line, made in Switzerland, and the "Reds" line, made in China.
Let's start by looking at the Swiss line.
BONES SWISS
Bones Swiss bearings are the original and the gold standard in skateboard bearings.
Other companies compare their bearings to this, featuring the highest quality steel and precision manufacturing, making them faster and more durable than the Reds line.
However, because it lasts so long, it requires proper maintenance. However, even if it does get dirty, it is relatively easy to clean, so you can rest assured.
BONES SUPER SWISS SIX
Super Swiss Six bearings use six slightly larger balls instead of the usual seven.
The advantage of a larger ball is that it has fewer frictional contact points, allowing it to travel a longer distance when pushed and resulting in a higher overall top speed.
In addition, since dust and dirt are less likely to get inside and the dirt falls off naturally, cleaning is less frequent and maintenance is easier.
BONES SWISS CERAMICS
Swiss Ceramics are Bones' highest quality bearings and are also known for their high price.
The internal ceramic ball bearings are harder than steel, creating less friction when they rotate. Additionally, the ceramic continually re-grinds the inside of the steel races as you ride, so they don't require as much cleaning or lubrication, but they should still be serviced from time to time.
The biggest advantage of ceramic bearings is that they don't rust, which makes them ideal for cruisers and commuter boards, especially if you spend a lot of time riding through puddles and rain. If you ride your board a lot, these bearings are definitely worth the investment.
However, while ceramic is harder than steel, it is also brittle, making it less ideal for skating on stairs, handrails, and other surfaces that are subject to heavy impacts.
Next, let's look at the Reds line of bearings.
BONES REDS
Bones Reds are Bones' entry level bearings, but that doesn't mean they're of poor quality.
These bearings have been trusted for years and are the best-selling skateboard bearings on the market, and because they are so affordable, if a bearing breaks or sticks, it's not a big deal.
New ones are affordable and keeping a spare pair that still works will come in handy if you or a friend need a bearing during a session.
BONES BIG BALLS REDS
Big Balls Reds are the Reds version of the Super Swiss Six, using slightly larger six balls instead of the usual seven, which means they spin faster, longer, and are a little more durable than regular Reds.
BONES SUPER REDS
Super Reds are a more advanced version of the regular Reds, made with higher quality steel and an improved surface finish on the balls and inner races for quieter, smoother rolling and increased durability.
BONES RACE REDS
Race Reds are designed for downhill skating but can also be used for regular skating.
The inner race runs inside the wheel and meets in the center, ensuring perfect alignment between the bearing and wheel, allowing you to tighten the axle nut securely and reducing wheel wobble and vibration.
While you might not notice much difference on regular skates, it makes a huge difference when you're gliding downhill at 50 mph. If you like to bomb hills, this is the perfect choice.
BONES CERAMIC SUPER REDS
Ceramic Super Reds are the Reds version of Swiss Ceramic, but are still top quality cruiser bearings. Ceramic ball bearings are virtually maintenance free and won't rust even when skating in the rain.
However, ceramic is brittle, so it is important to avoid any major impacts.
That said, both the Swiss Ceramic and Ceramic Super Reds are definitely a good investment for those who travel by board regularly.
No matter which Bones Bearing you choose, there's a wide selection to suit every budget, so enjoy the speed and feel the smooth ride of your new bearings.
